Clare students set to tackle slippery stuff

SA Water is helping more than 250 school students from Clare Primary School and Clare High School learn about the wonders of water by splashing and sliding through a one-hour interactive science spectacular called Slippery Stuff.

Surfing into the schools today, Slippery Stuff is an educational show designed for students in grades three to seven.

Presented by David Lampard from That Science Gang, the show takes practical science directly into classrooms to teach students about the physical, chemical and biological processes used to treat drinking water and sewage.

SA Water General Manager of Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said Slippery Stuff is part of the corporation’s ongoing commitment to teach children about important water issues.

“The session is a fun way to let students and teachers immerse themselves in the show and literally, hose-down myths about water,” Anna said.

“The students get to learn important information about how the water cycle is managed, and the way science is applied in a real-life scenario to make sure South Australians can enjoy a safe, reliable and secure water supply.”

The interactive show, which has entertained more than 18,000 students since 2011, holds water for teachers too, aligning with the Australian Curriculum in the areas of Science, Geography and Sustainability.

“Our fun show is a great way for students to learn about water and raises their awareness of the 663 million-plus people globally, who are without a safe water supply close to home,” Anna said.

“The lack of access has a significant impact on lives, from individual and population health, right through to day-to-day management of work, education, food supply and preparation.”

Slippery Stuff forms part of SA Water's extensive education program, which supports tours, workshops and shows for school-age children across South Australia, including Follow That Drop, Poo-Do Gurus and Sustainability Challenge.
