New fountains flow at Adelaide’s greatest Show

Bringing your own reuseable bottle to fill up for free at the five new SA Water drinking fountains positioned around the Adelaide Showground will help make a family visit to this year’s Royal Adelaide Show easier on the hip pocket and environment.

Hydrating a family of four with their recommended daily two litres from the new free fountains located in the Atrium, along the central Hamilton Boulevard and near the Beef Cattle Pavilion and Dog Pavilion, can avoid up to 12 single use plastic bottles making their way to landfill.

General Manager of the Royal Adelaide Show Michelle Hocking said the additional drinking fountains will be welcomed by visitors.

“It’s a great boost for visitor experience and inspires sustainable behaviour,” Michelle said.

“The Adelaide Showground has had a single drinking fountain for a number of years, which has been well utilised, in particular during the Royal Adelaide Show.

“We jumped at the chance to install these eye-catching fountains and SA Water should be congratulated on this outstanding initiative.”

Designed and manufactured in Australia, a low-lying drinking arm bubbler on the side ensures the fountain is child and wheelchair accessible and a central ‘water window’ enables easy, safe filling of bottles.

Smart technology in the fountains allow their water use to be remotely monitored, generating cleaning and maintenance schedules, and built-in solar lighting keeps them illuminated and easy to find at night.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Media Relations Joshua Zugajev said the new fountains were in place to support the biggest event of the South Australian calendar, and many other events hosted during the year.

“Having fountains at Adelaide’s iconic Showground, which is visited by 1.4 million people every year, is a fantastic opportunity for us to promote the many benefits of tap water – it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your health, your wallet and the environment,” Joshua said.

“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, we’re working to provide convenient places to refill and help South Australians continue leading the way in reducing plastic waste.”

The Adelaide Showground joins a growing network of organisations and venues, including the Adelaide Oval and 11 councils across the state, who are partnering with SA Water to install 30 smart water fountains.
