New mural takes flight on Riverland water pump shed

An attractive new mural on SA Water’s water pump building at Loxton in South Australia’s Riverland has transformed it into a vibrant canvas, which celebrates the environment and enhances the Loxton Community Conservation and Heritage Park.

The artwork by Riverland artist Jarrod Loxton features birds native to the area, including the Regent Parrot, Mallee Ringneck and Willy Wagtail.

SA Water’s Acting Senior Manager of Brand, Communications and Media Kellie McDonald said the mural is a welcome addition to the utility’s growing suite of art on infrastructure and is a fantastic way to showcase a small element of the picturesque Riverland.

“We encourage locals and visitors alike to come see the new artwork on Bookpurnong Road, and we hope it will enjoyed by the community and visitors to the region,” Kellie said.

“Country Arts SA and the Loxton Waikerie Council consulted with the community by undertaking a letter box drop to houses located near the building, emailed the Rotary Club of Loxton as the members worked on beautifying the surrounding park area and alerted the wider public through the council’s Facebook page.

“This artwork is part of our commitment to improving the visual amenity of our infrastructure in metropolitan and regional communities throughout South Australia.

“We continue to work with community groups and artists across the state to provide our pump stations, pipelines and even water towers with these fantastic paintings, so stay tuned for the next instalment!”

Jarrod, who is a renowned South Australian artist and has created murals across the state – including recently completed silo art at Galga and Copeville in the Murray Mallee – said he was excited to be involved in this project and wanted to create a piece that was visually striking.

"Designing and painting this mural was a wonderful experience, and I'm incredibly proud of the final result," Jarrod said.

Country Arts SA and Loxton Waikerie Council Arts and Cultural Facilitator Karen Tate said SA Water’s pump building is in an idyllic location, frequented by many local residents on their daily walks.

“I am thrilled to have a local mural artist, Jarrod Loxton, painting in his hometown of Loxton,” Karen said.

SA Water’s pump station boosts water pressure to customers on the west side of Loxton.
